Last weekend, we all fell ill to the nastiness that has been going around. Grayson had a runny nose for a few days, then it turned into a cough, then it turned into throwing up because of gagging on all of the mucus in his system. Any time he has had a runny nose in the past, it has turned into an ear infection. So on Tuesday, Jerry took him in for a visit with our pediatrician. Confirmed ear infection. She didn't give us the regular pink antibiotic since he just had an ear infection three months ago--Jerry and I both had many ear infection as infants/toddlers, but we both grew out of them as kids. Instead, she gave us a stronger antibiotic--the white stuff. One dose a day, for 10 days. I gave him one dose that afternoon, then after dinner we noticed little bumps along his arm. He had one on his face earlier, but we just thought it was a scratch. They didn't seem to bother him so we just let him be.
The next day he had big bumps all over his face. I was freaking out calling Jerry, my dad, the doctor's office, wondering if I needed to take him to the emergency room. His attitude was fine, normal. He just looked terrible, horrible, pathetic. I'm a hormonal mom, sick with a cold, dealing with a son with hives. Great.... We didn't have to take him to the emergency room since he was breathing just fine, but we did have to take him in to Urgent Care. The on-call doctor examined him and said that his ears did not look that bad and told us to take him off of the medication. She wasn't sure if it was a viral infection or an allergic reaction to the medication. She wanted us to take him to his pediatrician on Friday so that she could check his ears again.
Jerry took him in on Friday and his ears looked much better so no medication was prescribed. In the last week, we've dealt with five instances where Grayson has thrown up due to coughing (three were at home, one was in a Home Depot parking lot, another in a restaurant), three trips to the doctor, multiple hives outbreaks, many sleepless nights, and one irresistible kid even when he is pukey and full of hives. Luckily for us, his attitude never really wavered and he never had a fever *knock on wood*. The joys of parenthood.
